65th Arosa Sport Relay Race
When the starter’s gun to the first Arosa Sport relay race went off on the 10 August 1947, probably no one believed, that 60 years later this sport event with its 10 disciplines between the Untersee and the Obersee lake will still take place. While at the beginning local teams (TV and EHC) dominated the top rankings, it is now primarily the gymnastics clubs from Dübendorf, Hausen a.A. and Felsberg, who finish with the fastest times.
As for the disciplines, some changes have been implemented (single touring bikes with back pedal brakes were replaced by high-tech mountain bikes, shooting with small caliber rifles were exchanged by airguns, and inline skating displaced the cross-country run). But the rest, remained mostly the way the pioneers have initiated it 60 years ago.
Versatility is key
As always, the traditional 10 discipline competition will start at the idyllic Untersee lake, where a mountain runner carries the relay race stick to the shore of the Obersee lake. From there the stick must be brought across the lake in a rowboat, further via bikers, road runners and inline skaters to the sport facilities. The race will conclude with an obstable course (including climbing a flagpole), shooting (six balloons) and a run over the finish line.
If you aim for less than 18 minutes to obtain a spot in a leading position, no weakness in any discipline wil be forgiven. The particularly challenging disciplines always seem to be rowing, climbing the flagpole and of course shooting.
In parties of five, the 60 teams are asked to start the race between 10.30am - 3.50pm (depending on applications), in reverse order of last year's ranking. This keeps the suspense tension high, as yet also the first starting teams deliver very good performances.
