Horse Racing on Snow
In January 2013 turf season gets off to an impressive start with horse racing in the snow of Arosa. The first event is a skikjöring competition held by the Arosa winter sports schools, followed by flat racing, trotting races and a world exclusive: steeplechasing in the snow. The second day of racing takes place a week later on the idyllically situated racetrack on the Obersee lake. The unique, invigorating atmosphere of horse racing on snow is enjoyed not only by aficionados of the sport but also by visitors from all over the world, keen to appreciate unusual and exciting new experiences while on holiday.
Races have been held on the frozen Obersee lake for over 90 years. Did you know that Arosa and St. Moritz are the only places in the world where these elegant, powerful horses measure themselves against one another on snow?
On 18 February 1917, the Arosa Skikjöring Club organized racing on the Obersee lake for the first time, attracting an audience of 3,000 spectators. In 1922, trotting horses took their rounds on the ice field for the first time, although it was not until 1932 that the races became a more or less regular event. Since then, snow racing has been a fixture of the Arosa event calendar, except in bad weather.
