Projects

LBB wants to convince through high-quality offers

This requires a constant further development of the mountain offers and the company. The following is a list of the projects on which we are active in addition to the usual replacement and revision work.

    2021 to 2026: Expansion of photovoltaics

    In summer 2021, the roof of the Lavoz mountain restaurant and in summer 2022, the roof of the Pedra Grossa chairlift valley station were equipped with photovoltaic modules. This means that Lenzerheide Bergbahnen AG now has five photovoltaic systems. Lenzerheide Bergbahnen AG has analysed the further solar potential of the existing buildings. If all reasonable surfaces were equipped with photovoltaic panels, 20 to 25% of the year-round electricity demand could be covered. Not all areas are equally suitable (service life of the building, inefficient areas, electricity supply, etc.), so the areas will be prioritised and those with the highest priority will be realised in the upcoming years. The next projects to be equipped with photovoltaic modules are the Heidbüel mountain station and the new Täli chairlift.

    2022 to 2026: Digital ecosystem (al.digital)

    With the al.digital project, a digital transformation project (Digital Eco-System) is being set up, administered and managed together with ABB/AT/LMS. The focus is on the cross-destination optimisation of data and processes. This applies to our guests as well as to partner, such as our service providers and municipalities. The common goal is to bring tomorrow's guests closer to the destinations of Arosa and Lenzerheide as well as the summer and winter sports area of Arosa Lenzerheide through the integration of digital tools. In addition, the digital guest experience is to be made easier, improved, individualised and more exciting. We want to achieve this through simplified and clear access to all services – from arrival, sports equipment and mountain railway tickets to table and room reservations, individual packages and much more.

    The digital displays at the cash desks and in the area's own restaurants will be modernised and a «digital signage» project implemented.

    2023: Stone gnome path and staging of the Rothorn mountain station

    In the 15th and 16th centuries, ores were mined on the Parpan Rothorn. Legends and stories surround the mines on the Rothorn. The Lenzerheide Bergbahnen want to bring the mining of that time to life. In spring 2023, the walkway and stairs in the mountain station of the Rothorn aerial tramway will be renovated, staged and exciting facts about mining at great heights will be presented. During the summer of 2023, stonemasons will use local rock from the Parpan Rothorn to create an adventure trail on the former geology path for children and families. The opening is planned for the start of the 2024 summer season.

    2023: Child safety devices for the Tgantieni and Pedra Grossa chairlifts

    The two chairlifts Tgantieni and Pedra Grossa are used intensively by ski schools, children and families. Although no incidents have been recorded, Lenzerheide Bergbahnen is setting an example for child and family friendliness and is replacing the locking bars of the two chairlifts ahead of schedule with child-proof versions for the next winter 2023/24.

    2023: Increase in transport capacity of the Obertor chairlift

    The east-west connection with the Obertor chairlift is becoming increasingly popular. This sometimes leads to longer waiting times on the fixed-grip quad chairlift. Lenzerheide Bergbahnen AG has therefore decided to increase the transport capacity with additional chairs from the current 800 persons/hour to 1,200 persons/hour. This is intended to increase the quality of service for guests.

    2023: Renewal of avalanche lifts

    The existing avalanche lifts on the Stätzerhorn are designed as cable cars and have to be operated manually on site. This is associated with certain risks and the opening of the slopes on the Stätzerhorn can be delayed after heavy snowfall. The avalanche blasting cableway will be replaced in summer 2023 by avalanche blasting masts that allow remote ignition. This will make it possible to blast safely early in the morning and open the important pistes earlier.

    2023: Rerouteing of the Alp Scharmoin – Weisshorn Speed lane

    Between the Scharmoin middle station and the valley station of the Weisshorn Speed, a provisional path connection could be used for guests in recent summers. The connection has proved successful, so the existing lane from Alp Scharmoin to the valley station will be dismantled, and a new connection will be built on the route of the ski slope. The valley station of the Weisshorn Speed chairlift will thus continue to be ideally accessible for pedestrians and bikers in the future.

    2023: New construction of FLOWline in the Bike Kingdom Park

    In the bike park, adjustments will be made in various curves and the stress on the ground will be reduced at the start of the bike park. After the toboggan tunnel, the FLOWline will be renewed.

    2024: Replacement chairlift Täli

    The Täli chairlift was built in 1994 by the Leitner company and is the fourth most frequented transport facility in the ski area. The safety control system was renewed in 2014. The concession and operating permit was extended until 2024. The concession and operating permit for the Täli chairlift expire on 31 May 2024, after 30 years of operation, and cannot be extended without major investment due to its condition.

    The Täli chairlift will be replaced by a new transport system from Leitner for the winter of 2024/25. Lenzerheide Bergbahnen is building what is probably the most sustainable replacement installation in the Alpine region in terms of the construction and operation of the installation. The new lift will be equipped with a direct drive and the chairs will have a comfort design. The garaging, most of the supports and foundations of the current transport system will be upgraded, renewed and taken over as far as possible. A comfortable 4-seater chairlift with bonnets and a transport capacity of 1,800 persons/hour will be built. The drive is planned as a direct drive without gears, which consumes around 10% less energy. The top station and the garage will be the location of photovoltaic modules. Thanks to EcoDrive, the system will automatically adjust the speed to demand. The waste heat from the system will be used to heat the premises at the top station.

    2024 to 2030: Expansion of snow making system

    Lenzerheide Bergbahnen AG plans to invest a total of CHF 30 million in the expansion of its snow-making facilities over the following years. The focus will be on enlarging the Heidbüel reservoir from 34,000 m³ today to 132,000 m³. In addition, it should be possible to make snow on sections of the piste that do not yet have a permanently installed snow making system, such as the connection from the Stätzerhorn mountain station to Lavoz or the Valbella ski lift with the Val Schemaela-Valbella piste.

    2024 to 26: New building zBar

    Lenzerheide Bergbahnen AG is working on a project to rebuild the zBar. This will replace the current temporary structure.

    2026: New building of staff flats

    Lenzerheide Bergbahnen AG is planning to build an additional 26 staff flats at the valley station of the Rothorn 1 gondola lift. This is intended to counteract the shortage of living space for the company's employees. A partial revision of the local planning is necessary for the extension of the existing building.

    Development projects

    Summer and winter – Lenzerheide Bergbahnen would like to significantly improve access to the west side of the Fadail area for guests and is pushing ahead with a development of the area on its own initiative. Today, around 600 above-ground parking spaces across the entire area characterise the image, which is no longer up to date.

    For our guests, there is a lack of accommodation with ancillary services such as gastronomy and activities, which allows easy access to the area. The following strategic objectives were set for the development of the site in a needs-oriented and future-oriented manner:

    • The parking area will be largely underground for the benefit of nature.
    • The current parking area will be renaturalised, and the protected moor will be extended.
    • The range of accommodation (up to 100 managed accommodation units), gastronomy and activities will be expanded, regardless of the season and especially for the target group of families.
    • the ski lifts and the children's area will be modernised and upgraded accordingly.

    These measures will create an opening with a central portal function for the skiing, biking and hiking area on the west side. A project-related land-use plan is currently undergoing preliminary examination by the canton. A referendum on the necessary local planning revision will take place in 2024. Lenzerheide Bergbahnen will plan the next steps after the preliminary examination and will also inform the public in detail.

    Lenzerheide Bergbahnen would like to significantly upgrade the Canols car park area and create additional possibilities for tourist use. Today, the above-ground car parks and the temporary use of the area for major events dominate the landscape.

    The following strategic objectives were set for the site development:

    • Realisation of a double number of parking spaces in a multi-storey car park with sensible, purpose-oriented use of the shell.
    • Bus terminal for loading and unloading bus passengers
    • Creation of many flats for own employees
    • Creation of additional retail space for tourist use
    • Expanded possibilities for use during major events

    With these measures, the current site will be massively upgraded and better utilised. Together with a real estate developer, the project is currently being planned until it is suitable for investors. When this is the case, Lenzerheide Bergbahnen will inform the public in detail about the project and the next steps in good time.

    The complete replacement of the entire Scalottas axis is due in about 10 years. In connection with this, an analysis is already being carried out today to determine which cableway, with which type of cableway and which routing, including entry and exit, is viable for the future.

    Apart from the pure railway replacement, the Lenzerheide Bergbahn has also started a project for the future that includes the entire Scalottas side. The aim is to position the terrain from the (future) west entrance portal to the Scalottas summit for the next decades and to create the corresponding infrastructure conditions.

    In addition to the railway, this also involves, for example, the summit offer on the Scalottas, further leisure offers in summer and winter and a holistic and consistent strategy for the west side.
